About Aspen Colorado History

Aspen Colorado was originally a former silver mining town that transitioned into a ski resort in the mid 1900’s. Historically, the town got a lot of attention in the late 1800’s after the world largest silver nugget was discover in the Smuggler Mine. The nugget weighed over 1,850’+ lbs and was over 93% pure silver.

Like many mining communities, the town eventually became incorporated in 1879 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Today, the town of Aspen is a thriving ski community known for being one of the top winter playgrounds for the rich and famous.
