GARDEN OF THE GODS PARK AND VISITOR INFORMATION

In 1909, the Charles Perkins family gave the Garden of the Gods to the City of Colorado Springs, making it a public park accessible to visitors worldwide.

The park was officially designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972, further solidifying its status as a unique and significant natural attraction. The history of Garden of the Gods is intertwined with the history of Colorado and the surrounding area, making it a must-visit destination for those interested in nature and history.

Garden of the Gods Park Geology

Garden of the Gods is a unique geological park that showcases the power of nature and the beauty of millions of years of geologic processes. The park’s signature rock formations are made of a type of sandstone called Lyons Sandstone, which was formed over 300 million years ago. The sandstone was deposited as dunes in a large desert that covered much of the western United States. Over time, the sand was compressed and cemented into solid rock.

Various factors, including tectonic uplift, weathering, and erosion, created the rock formations in Garden of the Gods. The uplift of the earth’s crust caused the rock formations to be exposed at the surface, while wind, rain, and ice eroded the softer rock and created the unique shapes that we see today.
